FINANCES: Four things you can do NOW to escape the employee mindset

The employee mindset is a concept that many people struggle with, especially when it comes to personal finances. Ken and Mary, the founders of The Humble Penny, believe that breaking the employee mindset can lead to greater financial success and overall fulfilment. According to Ken and Mary, examples of the employee mindset include earning from one source, waiting for payday once a month, focusing on job security (which no longer exists), waiting for orders or directions to act, and seeking approval from superiors to validate ideas. They give ways we can break-free from this mindset. Identify and challenge limiting beliefs Ken and Mary suggest that the first step in breaking the employee mindset is identifying your limiting beliefs, challenging them, and replacing them with more empowering beliefs. For example, if you believe starting a business is too risky or you don't have the skills, focus on your transferable skills. If you believe your gender or race holds you back, look for evidence of success in others. Take calculated risks They recommend taking calculated risks that are strategic and have the potential for higher rewards. One practical way to do this is by becoming an 'intrapreneur' at work - essentially becoming an entrepreneur within your workplace by seeking out ways to create value and earn more. Embrace the growth mindset The growth mindset is a belief that you can develop your abilities and improve over time through hard work, dedication, and guidance from others. Join private members clubs or communities with similar mindsets and attend networking events to expand your knowledge. Take ownership of your career Seek out new challenges that will help you become enterprising. Volunteer for leadership roles at work or take on additional responsibilities to gain experience. Build relationships Building relationships will help you learn how others solve problems and open doors for making money and investing. Attend local hikes, cycling or running clubs, and networking events to meet like-minded individuals. Ken and Mary's advice encourages us all to stay positive, practical, and prayerful when it comes to our finances.
